🩴 [Product Review] Taiwan Sandals for Trail Running (母子鱷魚) Part 2 (Trail Run)

This is a continuation of the following article I wrote last time. Although the last review was about running Taiwan Sandals for trail running on the road, this time I would like to summarize my impressions when I ran in the mountains.

Running with Taiwanese sandals for Trail Running in the mountains

Surprisingly good grip, but no protection ability.

I did not have high expectations because of the low lugs compared to general treerunning shoes, but the results were unexpectedly disappointing. I think the softer sole had that effect. Especially on dry trails, it gripped better than regular road shoes or running sandals such as Luna sandals.

However, as far as thrust from the sole, there is almost no protection at all. There are no rock plates, of course, so if you step on a rock or tree root, it feels like you are being poked in the sole of your foot, which honestly hurts. It is a bit difficult to use on very technical or rocky courses.

Well, they were not originally developed as trail running sandals in their home country of Taiwan, but they are sold as "treerunning sandals" by a Japanese distributor, so I guess it can't be helped. However, from the point of view of those who prefer running sandals, I think they are luxurious and comfortable. I think they run with the feeling that it is normal for their soles to hurt. w

Outsole durability is low.

Wear of Taiwanese sandal outsole (accumulated mileage: about 100 km)

I ran more than 100 km including road, mountain pass, and trail, and the outsole was worn out heavily. Well, the sole itself is quite soft, which I had expected, but considering the price, I guess it is within the expected range. However, even in this condition, the grip seems to be maintained surprisingly well.

Wrap-up

The following is a summary of my impressions after running more than 100 km on both road and trail.

  • The shoes themselves are overwhelmingly light (131g for 27cm).
  • Suitable for road and cross-country running rather than for trail running
  • Overwhelmingly low price
  • Can be used as a regular replacement for the Nike Vaporfly or Hoka.
  • Not very durable, but reasonable considering the price
  • Exquisite softness and resilience of the sole
  • I can use them for everything from neighborhood shopping to running in the coming hot season.

Many people around me also run with Taiwanese sandals, and some of them have broken their personal bests with them, and in a sense, I think they are amazing sandals. I, too, have been enjoying them quite a bit recently, as the temperature has been rising and the number of times I have been out running with Taiwan Sandals has increased significantly. The biggest appeal of Taiwanese sandals is that they are "easy to run with. And they can also be used for serious running." Perhaps the most attractive thing about Taiwanese sandals is their multipurpose use.
